In a world of pirates, you're a young swashbuckler who's just lost his girlfriend to one of the most ruthless pirates around. You decide to go after her with little more than your wit and an old map. Naturally, this leads to plenty of comical misunderstandings and dozens of gnarly pirate puzzles. You manage to shipwreck on a tropical island, where you find that the only man who can help you is the meanest pirate of all, Guybrush Threepwood, a guy so bad he's been kicked out of every pirate organization in existence. To save your love from the pirates' life of misery, you'll have to overcome this pirate's lack of compassion. Don't worry – there are no wrong choices here – just a rollicking fantasy adventure with great characters and hassles aplenty. Once you get past the fact that Guybrush speaks with a goofy seventies accent and has teeth like John Wayne (if John Wayne had buckteeth) – this game delivers loads of farce and silliness. It's a sequel of sorts to "Interplay's" 1992 hit "Sam & Max Hit the Road," but while the original was a story-driven adventure game, "Monkey Island" is more of a glorified point-and-click adventure game. It's also the first adventure game to use LucasArts' new SCUMM engine. It's not quite as advanced as "Sam & Max"'s, but it still has some neat touches, like the ability to automatically combine any two items you pick up (and if you're stupid enough to take an item off without combining it with something else, the game will make sure you see what happens). Though it may not be quite as appealing as "Sam & Max," "Monkey Island" is still a very good game. The puzzles are challenging and very entertaining (if sometimes not-so-logical). The enemies are just as funny, with vicious dogs chasing you down, two-headed sea-hippos, and even a pirate who vomits on people. The game is divided into four chapters: "The Secret of Monkey Island", "LeChuck's Revenge", "Tearing Up Tangerine", and "At the End of the game" (The game also has two prequels due to it being made by the same people that made the original). Each chapter is divided into five parts, each part consisting of one adventure location. The locations are: All but one (the Flying Grouper) are at least partially accessible by boat.
